Ni tan rico, ni tan guapo
With only a week to complete a total tear-down and redo of a home, it's no surprise that many families complained afterward of renovations being shoddy and faked for the cameras!
Lo que su madre ocultaba
Many families have lost their homes after being featured on the series. Shockingly, host Ty Pennington is entirely unapologetic about what befell them. In an interview, Ty said he felt the show bore zero responsibility - "We left them with a financial adviser.
However, if the family chooses to triple-mortgage their house to start a business that they've never done before just to see if they can get into it, that's their own demise. That's how you lose your home."
Joven, pero con talento
While the show portrayed itself as a charity project, at the end of the day, network executives were willing to do anything for high ratings. A memo was leaked showing that the show purposely searched for families with sick kids in order to boost viewers.
The memo said casting directors were to search for a "Family who has multiple children w/ Down Syndrome (either adopted or biological)" and "a child with Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis." Talk about shameless!
Un diagnóstico casi cambia todo
While Ty's role as the host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is definitely his most prominent piece of work, this wasn't his first stint on home improvement reality TV.
Previously, he was a host of TLC's Trading Spaces, a show centered around two neighbors making over one room in each other's homes. However, he felt the show was exploitative. According to Ty, producers loved when neighbors were upset about the improvements, as their tears "got great shock value and a good reaction."
