The Post in Question
Chris’ controversial Instagram post (pictured below) is a photo of himself with his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, along with a beautifully-written caption about their relationship. The part of the post that sparked the public’s anger was when Chris wrote that Katherine gave him “a gorgeous healthy daughter.”
Chris was clearly referencing his newborn child at the time, Lyla, who was born in 2020. The couple also just welcomed another daughter named Eloise in May 2022. So, what was the issue in this seemingly harmless comment?
Before he met Katherine, Chris was married to actress Anna Faris. The pair share a child together, Jack, who’s now nine years old. Sadly, though, he struggled to survive during the first year of his life.
Jack was born two months premature and had to undergo various medical procedures. Luckily, he’s now happy, healthy, and a perfect little boy. Now a father of three, Chris shares custody of Jack with Anna.
Was it an Insult?
Chris’ mention of his daughter being “healthy” was interpreted by many as a dig at Jack and Anna. People took to social media to denounce the actor and labeled his post as “cringe-worthy.”
Chris’ fans, however, pointed out that referring to a newborn baby as “healthy” is a common turn of phrase and probably wasn’t meant to mean anything else. They were also quick to mention that Chris didn’t say anything about Jack’s health issues, or criticize his son or ex-wife in any way.
To his haters’ chagrin, Chris didn’t apologize for his comment but he did respond. The actor said, “My son’s gonna read that one day. He’s nine. And it’s etched in digital stone. It really […] bothered me, dude. I cried about it.”
Based on Chris’ response, it seems that he’s solely concerned with how Jack will feel about the public’s thoughts on this post and is unbothered by his decreasing fanbase. Ironically, the backlash is by people who claim to be worried about Jack’s feelings, as well.
The Trappings of Fame
Chris went on to describe his fame as being a “blessing” for himself but a “burden” for those around him. This isn’t the actor’s first brush with controversy, as his religious and political views have both been called into question, in the past.
It seems that the world has forgotten that celebrities are still entitled to their own thoughts and opinions. It appears that Hollywood A-listers have now also lost the right to show affection and gratitude for their families. At least, on social media, that is.
