The glamour of the spotlight is far from everything we’ve recently seen when it comes to Britney Spears and her turbulent personal life. Her legal battle against her father, Jamie Spears, to end her 12-year-long conservatorship continues, even though she lost the latest bid to terminate it. Her lawyer recently announced that Britney won’t resume her career while the conservatorship is still in place.
Britney Spears & Her Father’s Conservatorship
After a series of very public meltdowns, one of which had her shave her head, Britney’s conservatorship was implemented in 2008. According to the legal arrangement, her father and her then-lawyer had complete control over her financial and personal assets. After her ex-lawyer and co-conservator, Andrew Wallet, resigned in March 2019, it all fell under the control of Jamie Spears, Britney Spears’ dad.
Bids to Remove It & #FreeBritney Movement
The pop singer has been on an “indefinite work hiatus” since January 2019 following her father’s health issues. A couple of months later, her manager stated that it was possible for Britney to never return to finish her Vegas residency. Following an extended period of turmoil and problems between her father and her ex-husband, Britney began a bid in August 2020 to remove Jamie from controlling her personal life and career.
Although the Los Angeles Superior Court, Judge Brenda Penny declined the bid, she did, however, approve to appoint the Bessemer Trust as a co-conservator following Britney’s request. That means Jamie Spears will no longer serve as a sole conservator.
As soon as news of Britney’s problems with her dad broke out, her supporters began the #FreeBritney movement (and protests), which has been openly condoned by stars like Miley Cyrus, Cher, and Paris Hilton. In a statement by her lawyer, it became known that Britney is “afraid of her father,” which further fueled her supporters to raise awareness of the case.
So, what’s next? If her next bid is approved, we may see Britney Spears on the stage again. Otherwise, we’ll be left with her timeless hits.
