Siren is a dating app that lets women call the shots putting the ladies in the driver’s seat when it comes to finding the perfect match. Female users can control who sees their image, communicate with them, and what type of date to pursue.

“Women Needed to Control Visibility”

The creators of Siren, CEO Susie Lee (left on the picture below) and design director Katrina Hess (right on the image below), wanted the users to give clear signals that they’re interested and comfortable talking to the suitor of their choice.

"I just started looking (at online dating options) and very quickly realized how many things are out there and how immediately my 'creepy meter' went up," Lee said.

As more and more women started publicizing complaints of unsolicited sexual advances online, the subject has come to attention. A 2013 report shows that nearly 30% of online daters have been contacted in a way that made them feel uncomfortable or harassed, with 42% of female users compared with 17% of men.

Siren Is for Everyone

Lee wanted to make sure that the app is not the counterpart to the “He-Man Woman Hater’s Club” but a place where women could control their images and see them.

When a user signs in to the app, they’re prompted to take an in-app photo to prove they look like the rest of their profile. Next, everyone is prompted with an open-ended question of the day.

This is where things change depending on your gender. Women will see all the men who responded that day. Based on the answers, women have two options: to make their profile visible to the men they’ve liked or save their profiles, scope out future responses, and get a broader sense of their personality.

On the other hand, male users can see the female’s answers just without seeing their profile pictures. If a man likes a female’s response, he can hit an option to notify Siren, which takes a third party action, alerting the woman that a user has liked her answer and inviting her to check him out.
