What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is the body and mind’s reaction to various situations, including those that may be dangerous, stressful, or unfamiliar. It’s a sense of distress, uneasiness, or even dread before some kind of event. It can help us stay aware and alert; however, those that suffer from anxiety disorders don’t always feel normal.
While everyone may display their anxiousness and feelings in different ways, it can be hard to understand the warning signs. However, there are a few signs and signals to look for that are considered to be less common when it comes to anxiety. Here are a few:
In some cases, anxiety can lead to experiencing physical symptoms including stomach pains and headaches. They can also experience panic attacks which can include shortness of breath, chest pains, and more. They aren’t always panic attacks though. These physical illnesses can also be eczema and more.
Those that suffer from anxiety can also feel tired more often because their bodies are over-producing adrenaline which causes them to switch into fight or flight mode. It can affect their ability to sleep, and it can also get worse at night since there are fewer distractions.
Anxiousness can cause a person to sleep more or have problems falling asleep or even to wake up multiple times throughout the night. They may also have nightmares or night terrors.
Anxiousness can also affect a person’s eating habits. Those that suffer may eat more or less than before. Children can also change their eating behaviors due to stress, and this can include restricting their food, purging, or bingeing.
Sometimes, anxious people may have no appetite, while others may turn to food as a way to numb the anxious feelings.
Anxiety can cause people to have a difficult time focusing by having them think about negative situations. This can result in anxious people being late for work regularly or having a hard time focusing on tasks that they would typically do without a problem.
People with anxiety can also start to avoid activities that they once enjoyed or even choose to spend more time alone. This might be their way of escaping or avoiding anxiety-filled situations.
